It is with great pleasure that I welcome you to the Tunisian-Maltese Chamber of Commerce and Industry. On behalf of the founding members, I have the honor of presenting the foundations of an enhanced bilateral cooperation, rooted in the active engagement of civil society in both countries, with the aim of making a meaningful contribution to the development of our bilateral relations.
This Chamber is neither merely another addition to the register of chambers of commerce nor a replication of previous initiatives. It is founded upon an original strategic vision based on a fundamental conviction: small states become stronger when they join forces and cultivate complementary partnerships.
It is in this spirit that we believe in the possibility of building what may be called a Mediterranean Economic Belt, bringing together countries of comparable size such as Tunisia, Malta, Albania, Kosovo, Montenegro, Cyprus, and others, with the objective of promoting economic integration and investment while strengthening their competitiveness within the Mediterranean and European spheres.
The ambitions of the Tunisian-Maltese Chamber of Commerce and Industry extend far beyond trade and investment. They are structured around five major strategic pillars:
First, the economy in all its dimensions—trade, industry, investment, services, and entrepreneurship—with the objective of creating new opportunities for partnership and sustainable growth.
Second, scientific research, particularly in the fields of civilizational, linguistic, and anthropological studies, building upon the deep historical and cultural affinities that unite our two peoples.
Third, culture and history, as our two countries share a common civilizational heritage shaped by centuries of interaction at the heart of the Mediterranean. This shared legacy is reflected in archaeological sites, historical monuments, and enduring cultural ties that deserve further research, preservation, and promotion.
Fourth, environmental protection, which represents a shared responsibility and one of the principal challenges of sustainable development throughout the Mediterranean region.
Fifth, waste valorization and the circular economy, through the promotion of investment and innovative technologies capable of transforming environmental challenges into genuine economic opportunities.
This Chamber holds particular strategic significance. Malta serves as Tunisia's gateway to Europe, while Tunisia constitutes Malta's gateway to Africa, thanks to its strategic geographical location and its continuously expanding economic relations with African markets.
Furthermore, Malta's central position in the Mediterranean, together with its membership in the Commonwealth, opens broader prospects for cooperation with a community of fifty-six sovereign and equal states across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and the Pacific. This dimension creates additional opportunities for economic cooperation, investment, and cultural exchange, while strengthening the presence of our businesses in new international markets.
We regard this Chamber as a platform for dialogue, a bridge for communication, an incubator for initiatives, and a practical instrument for bringing together business leaders, universities, research centers, cultural institutions, and stakeholders engaged in environmental protection and sustainable development.
We firmly believe that genuine success can only be achieved through collective effort, mutual trust, and partnerships founded on reciprocal respect and shared interests. In this way, we will serve the interests of both our countries and contribute to building a more prosperous, more integrated, and more sustainable Mediterranean region.
It is our sincere hope that this Chamber will become a model of excellence in cooperation between Tunisia and Malta, and a launching point for broader partnerships serving the future of the entire Mediterranean region.
